Software Help Guide

The Software Help Guide, or SHG, is a collection of software descriptions, help, and tutorials on software installed in the Instructional Computing (IC) Labs. The goal of the SHG is to provide an online software resource for students, faculty, as well as computing consultants.

How to use the software help guide

The SHG is orgainized by software category, title, and projects. Under the software category, software titles and vendors are listed under major software categories such as database, graphics and publishing, and programming. Similarly, the title section lists software titles and vendors in alphabetical order. These two sections provide useful software descriptions. The projects may be quick references, tutorials, or more in dept articles explaining tips and tricks for the more common programs. Projects are continually updated and improved by over 40 consultants employed at Instructional Computing.

To navigate through the Guide, select a browse method in the left menu. The topic will either expand below to list more subtopics which you can then click or it will display a page with which you can further browse. Clicking a software title will reveal further information about the title such as if any projects are associated with it, in what labs the software is installed in at IC, its platform, as well as links to further information about the program.
software descriptions
We maintain records of all the software Instructional Computing has installed within its laboratories. You can use the search engine with abstract ideas to quickly find software to help you with a task.

quick references
Quick references are designed to give an overview of a piece of software and its usuage. These generally span the breadth of the program, and are especially for those who are looking to learn new software.

tutorials
Tutorials concentrate on depth over breadth. One topic or task will be covered from start to finish, with a high level of detail. While designed primarily for those expanding their knowledge of a particular piece of software, it also can be useful as a tool for someone new who would like to be able to do things quickly.

articles
Articles are informational explorations to help explain ideas and conflicts within computing. Informational comparisons are also common tutorials. These are exclusively found in the projects listing due to their cross-software nature.
